In each of the past ten years the state of Montana has produced approximately 150 million bushels of wheat and traditionally it is ranked third in the nation for all wheat production. Chouteau and Hill County are often the top producers of wheat in the state as they both anchor what is known locally as the Golden Triangle, a region in central Montana in the shape of a triangle that includes Shelby, Havre and Great Falls. This seven-county area produces about 45% of Montana's wheat crop each year.
2016 is not supposed to be a good year for Montana's wheat farmers, but like many who toil in the fields of Montana the farmers seldom complain much. They just get up every morning, work hard, and hope for the best.
This photograph of wheat near Belt, Montana was taken in the heart of Montana's Golden Triangle. I will be making many more photos of wheat and wheat farmers this coming year, too.
This week I decided to change the cover photo on my website more frequently. Not exactly Earth shattering stuff to report...no. But with many more options and many more photos as my disposal I thought I should warn you that the cover photo and page might change more frequently in the weeks and months ahead.
The new cover photo this time is an oldy but goody. It is a photo of wheat that I took outside of Chinook a few years back but only recently developed. And who doesn't like nice wholesome photos of wheat? I know I do. And I enjoy making photographs of wheat even more.
Is there a different photo you want to see on the cover of the website? If there is let me know.
My photograph of a wheat field outside of Great Falls is featured as a full-page spread in the June 2015 Big Sky Journal. A copy of that page is seen above. And the original photograph can be seen below. It was my time being published in Big Sky Journal, which focuses more on fly fishing than I do. But it was of course very nice to have one of my more rural and agricultural photos appear in such a good magazine.
