Portrait of the West: Pete Berry

NOTE: This is a brief article (and photo) I had published in the winter 2018 issue of Range Magazine.

Cowboys can be ranchers, but not all ranchers are cowboys. Even the children of ranchers can be cowboys, too. But most cowboys are hired hands who travel the countryside working on many different ranches over their lifetime and helping ranchers work their cattle and tend to their horses. Pete Berry, of Havre, Montana is one of them…a cowboy for hire.

Though he first worked on his family ranch for decades near Reed Point, Montana and still has a small ranch all to himself west and north of the Milk River near the small town of Havre, Berry has spent the better part of the last 20 years working on other ranches soon after his father sold the family ranch in 1998.

“It’s what I had to do,” the 63-year-old Berry said. “Being a cowboy is a great way of life. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Berry first saddled up when he was just eight years old. “It was a little Welsh pony my father bought me.” Soon after the young Pete Berry graduated to quarter horses and began roping cattle from the saddle and training colts.

Though he worked on ranches all over Montana and South Dakota, Berry spent most of his time recently on ranches in north central Montana, where the land is large, the weather is extreme, and the people are sparse. I fell in love with the Bear Paw Mountains,” Berry said. “I don’t think there’s a better piece of cow country anywhere in the United States.”

Equine photography appears on cover of Range Magazine

One of my favorite equine photos will appear on the cover of the summer edition of Range Magazine in the next few weeks. It is my fourth cover shot on the magazine.

The photo of a cowboy riding a horse also includes some more of my equine photography inside. This particular photo is of Rylan Mitchell, of Havre, Montana. It was taken a few years back on the Kellam Ranch during the branding season. Rylan has never been a big fan of my camera and will often hide when I come nearby. This was a perfect photo for him. Not only will get to brag that he was on the cover of a magazine, but this wide angle photo of the front of a horse perfectly hides him from view. I'm sure he will be happy.

You can find copies of Range Magazine on newsstands across Montana and the western United States everywhere.  To subscribe to Range Magazine go to www.rangemagazine.com or call 800-RANGE-4-U. The issue with my photo of Mike on the cover will be available in a few weeks.

Photos of ranchers branding cattle appear in the new Montana Magazine

Be sure to check out the latest issue of Montana Magazine, which is available on newsstands now. The May 2018 issue features many of my cowboy photos and ranching photos, as well as a story written by me. It commemorates the start of branding season across Montana. Featured in the opening two-page spread is my friend Donny Faber, who is now working on a ranch in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. He is new to the area, so to all of the good people I know there, be sure to invite him over for dinner and take him out for a few drinks. He always buys the first round. Cheers!

Cowboy photo for ranching product billboard

Early last year a company in New Zealand hired me for an assignment to photograph Montana cowboys and ranching operations in Dillon, Big Timber, and Bridger, Montana. These agriculture photos would be used in a new ad campaign and for a trade show display at the largest agriculture trade show in the southern hemisphere‒New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays.

The company that hired me was Te Pari Products. They are an international leader in livestock handling equipment, including wireless RFID tools and dosing guns. You can see some of the photos I took by visiting my gallery of photos of vaccinating cattle.

Above is a billboard that was created with one of my cowboy photos from the shoot. Hope you enjoy.

Cattle photography appears on cover of April 2018 issue of Drovers Magazine

My photo of a herd of beef cattle appears above on the cover of the April 2018 Drovers Magazine. Drovers is the largest beef cattle publication in the world with a total circulation of 250,000 covering 75% of all cow/calf producers in the United States and 90% of stock and fed cattle producers. It is a publication of Farm Journal, Inc.. It is a high honor for any agriculture photographer who makes photos of ranchers and photos of cattle, and lucky for me this is the third issue in a row I have been featured on the cover of the magazine. I was also featured on the cover of the March 2018. To see more of my published photos be sure to go here.
